The 30 Myths Campaign

"We are busting nutrition myths and bringing science-based dietary facts back to the Kenyan kitchen. Join me on this journey."

Myth #1: Carbohydrates Make You Fat

Addressing the most common fear in dieting. Learn why traditional African staples like Ugali and Sweet Potatoes are actually good for you.

One of the most persistent myths in modern diet culture is that carbohydrates lead directly to weight gain. This has caused many to completely avoid our traditional staples such as Ugali, Sweet Potatoes, and Arrowroots. Carbohydrates are the body's primary energy source. The issue isn't carbohydrates themselves, but rather portion control and the type of carbohydrate. Complex carbohydrates provide sustained energy and essential fiber. It's time we stop demonizing real food and start focusing on balance.

Myth #2: Healthy Eating is Always Expensive

Discover how indigenous greens like Managu and Terere offer superior nutrition at a fraction of the cost of imported superfoods.

There is a misconception that to eat healthy, one must consume imported, expensive superfoods like quinoa or kale. In reality, East Africa is home to some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. Indigenous greens such as Managu, Terere (Amaranth), and Sukuma Wiki are packed with iron, calcium, and vitamins. They are incredibly affordable and readily available. True nutrition is about eating local, seasonal, and culturally relevant foods.
